Description
Stunning early C20th Yoruba chief’s robe, agbada, tailored from beige wild silk, sanyan, and white hand spun cotton asooke strip weave cloth and hand embroidered in the classic “two knives” style. Unusually the embroidery is also bi-coloured in a seemingly random fashion that is oddly pleasing. Sanyan wild silk was one of the most prestigious of Yoruba fabric types and owning a robe of this quality and luxury a sign of high rank and wealth. It is in excellent condition, indicative of careful handling as it was passed down over the generations.
Measurements 109 inches x 51, 277 cm, 130.
