Wide strip C19th silk and cotton wrapper cloth in extremely rare style

Description

AS591 – This nineteenth century silk and handspun cotton strip weave cloth is an anomaly in that comprises just four much wider strips, each just over 11 inches/ 29 cm wide – in contrast the vast majority of C19th aso oke that we know from museum collections and my own collecting has widths of either 4 or in some cases 5 inches. However there is some evidence in the small corpus of C19th Yoruba strip weaving that a greater range of widths was made at that date. Interestingly all of the small number of examples of this cloth type I have seen are the same large scale check design. All were collected in a small part of the Yoruba speaking region where old examples like this are highly prized as family heirlooms. The predominance of very finely spun silk thread gives this cloth a very light soft feel. A similar piece is illustrated in my recent book African Textiles: the Karun Thakar Collection Prestel (2015:121). Condition is excellent.

Measurement: 83 inches x 46 ins, 211cm x 113cm
