Description

Beautiful early to mid 20th white hand spun cotton Yoruba chief’s robe with hand embroidery in wild silk, sanyan. White cloth was particularly associated with Islamic notions of purity and suitable for wear by high ranking clerics, Muslim rulers and chiefs, and on festival days. It was called fari in Hausa and fuu in Yoruba. While this very narrow 3.5 cm width strip cloth could have been woven by either a Hausa or a Yoruba weaver the embroidery suggests the work of a Yoruba craftsman, perhaps in Ilorin. Condition is excellent. Measurements: 105 inches x 48, 267 cm x 122.
These dramatic robes work well as a wall hanging in a contemporary interior.
