This is among the finest examples I have seen of a quite rare variant style of Asante woman’s kente cloth. Instead of the familiar grid layout being woven from an alternation of warp faced and weft faced blocks along each strip, here it’s formed by blocks of red, green and yellow weft stripes. Woven from cotton throughout, the dark blue warp subdues but doesn’t conceal the brighter colours in the weft stripes. Look carefully and you will see that virtually every block of stripes is different. Dates from circa 1930-1950 and is in excellent complete condition. Measurements 70 inches x 45, 178 cms x 114.
