Ceremonial smock for a chief or senior hunter, Waala people, Wa town, north west Ghana, first half of C20th. Front view. Hand spun cotton strip weave tailored by hand, leather amulets containing powerful charms. Wearing a garment like this was thought to protect from wild animals, bullets, and the spells of rivals. They are rarely found these days. Condition: one small hole lower front, has clearly been in a dusty corner for many years.
