E954 – Although mixed strip Ewe kente cloths with four or more warp striped patterns were not uncommon they were usually quite simple pieces that relied on the variation of pattern for visual impact. I can’t recall ever seeing another example with the quality and quantity of float motifs that decorate this beautiful cloth. Six different strip designs alternate across the cloth, with the predominantly white strip breaking up the design field markedly. Pattern blocks are carefully aligned between the strips to form a regular layout, each block made up of two weft faced stripe sets framing a very neatly woven extra weft float motif. These motifs include hands, people, animals, birds, reptiles. Overall this is a subtle and harmonious piece that I find very appealing. Dates from circa 1930s-1950s. Two small old darned repairs, otherwise condition is excellent.

Measurement: 112 inches x 71, 284 cm x 180.
