Description

FR680 – Interesting early to mid C20th variant on the heavy blue and white cotton cloths of the Fulani and Bamana peoples of Mali. This unusual ten strip cloth, woven from thick hand spun cotton in a creamy white colour, has regular rectangular weft blocks of indigo dye cotton, each with a small white tapestry weave insert motif. Cloths of this family were owned and worn by important elderly men and women as a mark of senior status. Collected in Ghana where there is a centuries old tradition of importing fabrics from Mali, this piece has a small frayed area at one end but otherwise is in excellent complete condition.

Measurement: approx. 78 inches x 41 ins, 198 cm x 104cm
