Almost all old cloths from the Bondoukou region of north eastern Ivory Coast have an indigo blue and white hand spun cotton background, a very few have a solid blue ground. This cloth is the only one that we have seen that has a plain white cotton background. On this the basic decoration of indigo weft faced stripes at irregular intervals is elaborated into a multiplicity of different widths and variations, along with a scattering of extra weft float geometric motifs. Just one of these has a small flash of red cotton. This unique cloth probably dates from the nineteenth century and offers an important glimpse of earlier textile design in the region. Condition: I bought this cloth many years ago in a badly stained condition and only recently found a conservator who was able to remove the stains and patch repairs on a few small worn holes.
Measurements: 112 ins x 66 ins, 284 cm x 168 cm.
