Description
This early C20th robe is unique in my experience, being tailored from alternate strips of dark indigo check “etu” hand spun cotton in 6 cm widths, and strips of beige wild silk, “sanyan” in 10 cm widths. It combines two out of the three most prestigious fabrics in pre-colonial Nigeria, sanyan and etu, missing only the magenta wild silk alaari. We can identify the silk strips as the work of a Yoruba weaver, while the tailoring and embroidery on this one, in the classic “two knives”, could be the work of either Hausa or Yoruba men. Date is circa 1900. Condition is very good.
Measurements – width 113 inches, length 51 inches, 287 cm x 130.
