AS543 – Unique Yoruba women’s aso oke wrapper cloth with a distinctive colour scheme and original use of extra weft patterning. Although the format of this cloth is close to others where extra weft float patterning runs almost the whole length of each strip, on this example the patterning is an alternation of rows of short grey cotton floats arranged to form diagonals, with rows of white cotton floats in small “>” shapes. The colours used, white and grey on a background that blends grey, white and black, are also extremely unusual. it is a testament to the inventiveness and variety achieved by aso oke weavers that despite the many thousands of Yoruba cloths I have seen, there can still be surprise combinations such as this. Condition is good, with a few worn spots or faint marks. Retains its original hand sewn seams and hems throughout. Dates from mid C20th.
