ADK099- Extraordinary and unique Fante chief’s cloth from Ghana

1 in stock

Extraordinary and unique Fante chief’s cloth from Ghana. Gold braids, velvets, embroidered silk fragments, are set out in squares on a rich red felt background, in an assortment of stars, moons and suns. In the C19th and earlier European traders competed for the loyalty of local rulers with gifts of extravagant looking bling in the form of embroidered robes and capes. This piece that dates from the first half of the C20th not only continued that tradition but likely recycled some of the materials. There’s a couple of easily restored small damaged areas (see the second row from top of the full view) but overall condition is good. Measurements 145 inches x 82, 369 cm x 208
