Description

FR609 – Made up of six broad weft faced strips woven from hand spun cotton this cloth is a rare example of an undocumented and obscure cloth style from the area of the town of Kpalimé in Togo. I collected one or two other similar pieces about a decade ago but have not seen any more subsequently. Kpalimé is on the eastern fringe of the Ewe speaking region and was apparently the source of a number of quite distinctive variant cloth forms of which almost nothing is known as yet. This cloth is complete and in excellent condition, with one small smudge of indigo visible towards the right of centre on the second strip down in the photograph. Dates from circa 1920-40.

Measurement: 104 inches x 56 ins, 264cm x 143cm
