Description

NW549 – Beautiful hand spun indigo dyed cotton woman’s wrapper  cloth from a sub group of the Yoruba speaking peoples in Nigeria. There is a great deal of local variation in this tradition of women’s weaving and the precise origin of this distinctive piece is unknown. It has a number of unusual features – the use of three small panels, rather than two wider ones, the fact that each panel is different, and the presence of three small white float motifs. Dates from circa 1950s and has a few tiny worn holes.

Measurements: 65 ins x 54, 166cm x 137cm.
