This beautiful cloth is an Ewe master weaver’s unique reinvention of a classic Asante kente design called “akyempim” or “a thousand shields.” On a blue and white cotton check background the lattice pattern of “shields” is here executed in many different colours, some of which blend with the background disrupting the overall symmetry. The borders at both ends are built up from three rows of blue blocks and rows of red or yellow stool motifs. In excellent complete condition. Dates from circa 1930-1950s.
Measurements 123 inches X 71, 313 cm X 180.
