The tightly stitched and closely patterned designs on this dark resist indigo dyed woman’s wrapper cloth from Abeokuta in south Western Nigeria give the finished cloth a distinctive puckered and textured effect that remains even after numerous washes and regular use. The cotton cloth is covered with stitched in patterns in lines, stars, herring bone, etcetera, and thousands of small circles tie dyed with raffia in a tremendously laborious procedure. , The cloth was dipped repeatedly in an indigo dye vat to create the intense dark blue colour, then, once it had dried, the threads stitched and tied to form the motifs were carefully removed. In excellent condition.
