This Ewe kente chief’s cloth is the standout piece among our current inventory of blue and white cotton kente. Paired blocks of deep indigo blue frame a variety of finely woven and varied extra weft float motifs including small birds and fish, set against a background with a subtle textured effect in the multiple narrow blue lines crossing the strips. Weavers achieved this unusual effect by not pulling the pick of the weft tight before reversing it. Dates from circa 1930s to 1950s and is in excellent condition.
Measurements: 116 inches x 70, 295 cm x 178.
