E930 – Exceptionally fine Ewe kente woman’s cloth with elaborate and finely woven supplementary weft float motifs on a dark blue and white striped cotton ground. The designs include a man catching fish, a large snake, a group of four men, and a wading bird catching fish. The master weaver has skilfully modified the placement of the weft faced blocks to accommodate these larger than normal float motifs. Probably due to the high cost of commissioning cloths with this quantity and quality of float motifs and the lesser resources for ceremonial dress available to most Ewe women very few women’s cloths of this quality were woven. Dates from around 1920-50. Condition is excellent.
Measurements: 79ns x 52, 201 cms x 133.
