K292 – Superb and sophisticated chief’s silk kente. The highest quality of Asante silk kente are extremely hard to source, and in contrast to the rather flash boldness of more mundane pieces of kente, require careful attention to subtle details to appreciate. This very fine Asante silk men’s kente is a quite rare variant of the classic pattern known as “Oyokoman.” Illustrated among Rattray’s 1926 collection of warp stripe samples” it adds additional narrow stripes to the basic Oyokoman pattern. However what lifts this cloth to a higher level is the variety and subtle refinement of the extra weft float motifs throughout, in combination with the careful placement of small amounts of pale blue. It is in excellent complete condition. Dates from circa 1900-1920s.
Measurement: 115ins x 80, 293 cm x 203.
