Yoruba indigo dyed “adire alabere” woman’s wrapper cloth from 1950s Nigeria with finely achieved almost organic patterning. Borders of tiny tie dyed shapes frame the stitched resist centre. This lovely cloth has a soft well used feel despite it’s excellent condition and is a rare survival. Made as cheap everyday wear for women who could not afford more prestigious imported printed cloth, the vast majority were worn to shreds and discarded. We have to search long and patiently today to find these reminders of an important aspect of Nigerian dress history.
Measures 74 inches x 63, 188 cm x 160.
