Faded and worn beauty recovered from deep in my storeroom, this soft blue background Ewe kente men’s cloth has a varied array of complicated and neatly woven weft float motifs, mainly in orange, red or white, including people, animals, birds and so on. The motifs are framed by quite wide weft faced blocks made up of multiple narrow stripes in red, white, pink, orange, and black. Among the motifs I particularly like the two people holding hands, and a snake with a bird. This is a much used cloth dating from around the 1920s, with a soft worn handle and very slight colour run giving a faint pink tinge, otherwise good condition with no holes or stains. Would look beautiful as a bed cover.
