Description
Beautiful faded indigo handspun cotton woman’s wrapper cloth from a subgroup of the Igbomina Yoruba people east of the city of Ilorin in Kwara state, Nigeria. Notice the subtle changes in the shade of blue across the cloth. Woven in two panels by a woman using the upright loom. This rare style was called elejo, meaning “with snake”, after the pattern that recalled the back of a python. It was a highly prestigious cloth worn for weddings. Dates from circa 1930-1950 and is in excellent condition.
