Description
Unusual Fante Asafo flag with a patterned cloth background and an idiosyncratic variation of the British Union Jack in the corner. An Asafo soldier flanks a large turtle and a giant snail. The trade cloth background is an interesting example of the kind of cloth printed in Manchester England early in the C20th specifically for export to West Africa. The flag dates from circa 1920s and is mounted on a custom made stretcher.
