Description

FR670 – Large imported cotton cloth man’s wrapper from Ivory Coast with fold and stitch resist indigo dyed patterning. In the first half of the twentieth century the availability of cheap imported white cotton cloth throughout much of West Africa increased dramatically as European commercial traders stepped up their presence following the establishment of colonial regimes. Cloth was distributed on credit to women traders who arranged for to be dyed in indigo and sold by itinerant traders. However although patterned cloth like this was once plentiful it was cheap everyday cloth and was used heavily then discarded once it fell apart. As a result very few pieces indeed of any age at all have survived and we rarely find any at all. This piece is a rare survival.  Condition is excellent. Dates from mid C20th.

Measurement: 106 inches x 73, 270 cm x 186.
