Description

Igbomina subgroup of the Yoruba, Nigeria, circa 1930-1950. Very rare local style of wedding cloth. Woven from hand spun cotton in two panels by a woman weaver on the upright single heddle loom, with a wide band of brightly coloured extra weft float patterning along the lower edge. Typically a woman would weave a cloth like this for her daughter’s wedding. There were a number of distinct sub styles in village groups of the Igbomina and the exact origin of this one has not been established.
