Description
Superb classic period Fante Asafo flag with a highly unusual printed fabric ground and applied border. A man holds the scales used in pre-colonial Ghana to weigh the gold dust currency, while at left is a large flatfish in a pond. The style of the figure suggests that this flag is from the Saltpond workshop, perhaps by one of the greatest of the Fante master flagmakers of the golden age of Asafo design, Kweku Kakanu (1910-1982) and it dates from around the 1940s. In excellent complete condition.
Measurements 171 cm x 101, 67 inches x 40.
