“It boils but it doesn’t burn” – a man puts his hand into the bubbling water at the top of a cooking pot. This classic image tells a rival company that they may be making a big show of being dangerous but they are really no threat. Superb mid C20th flag by the important documented flagmaker known as Nana McCarty (died circa 1955; a.k.a. Mr Mankato, birth name Kwame Boah). See Forni & Ross, Art, Honor, and Ridicule (2017:61-62) for a discussion of this significant figure and the Anomabo workshop with which he was associated and a flag by the same artist in the collection of the Fowler Museum, UCLA dated by them to around 1940. In well worn but complete condition, with minor marks and old repairs. .
