Description

Fine example of a rarely found and visually striking style of adinkra cloth in which the background is assembled from pieces of fabric in two colours arranged to form a grid – this is sometimes made up of local strip woven cloth, others, as here, are imported fabric patch-worked together. Although I have seen two black and white examples the majority are in this orange and red combination. Almost all examples are much simpler than this with an alternation of just two different stamped motifs – this is one of only a very small number I have seen with multiple different motifs. Given the similarity between them I think it likely all these cloths were made by a single artist or workshop, probably during the 1960s. Condition: excellent.

Measurement: 141 inches x 90 ins, 358 cm x 229 cm
