E1251 – Classic style Ewe men’s cloth with a large ox motif at centre.

Description

Right at the centre of this lovely Ewe kente chief’s cloth there is a single large figurative supplementary weft float motif depicting an ox, presumably at the request of the wealthy patron who commissioned the cloth from a master weaver. An ox was the ultimate sacrificial offering to a cult shrine in Ewe religious tradition, only affordable by the most successful, so perhaps this marked such a prestigious occasion. Other very nicely woven float motifs framed by quite varied weft faced blocks are set on the pleasing background pattern of quite soft coloured warp stripes. Dates from circa 1920-1950 and is in excellent condition.

Measurements 115 inches x 69, 292 cm x 175.
