E1167 – Beautiful and quite unusual style of Ewe kente men’s cloth where a plainer section at the ends of the strips combines with the two edge strips to form a frame around the central field. The background combines a black cotton warp with an orange weft but the quite balanced thread count allows the black to tone down the orange. Across the cloth pairs of weft faced blocks in the same colours form rows, joined by pairs of wide stripes. The float motifs are predominantly geometric but there is a single man with a staff and a single small animal. Overall this is a carefully planned and quite distinctive cloth dating from around 1950. There’s one small patch repair but otherwise it’s in excellent neat condition. Measurements 107 inches X 75, 272 cm X 190.
