Description
A C19th Yoruba cloth repurposed as a waist sash, this one in a distinctive and very rare style. I have found around 10 old cloths in this stye over the past few decades but have never been able to precisely identify the origin. Hand spun indigo blue and white cotton is combined with both float motifs and some delicate weft stripes in silk from the trans-Saharan trade. As found this cloth would have been worn by a lady as a kind of waist sash on top of a lace or brocade festival outfit. In good condition.
Measurements 7’7″ x 2’1, 231 cm x 64.
