Description
Two panel woman’s loom wedding cloth called a “Duna”, from the Nupe people of central Nigeria, circa 1960s. A very neatly woven classic example of this style of cloth with a good variety of designs. The red thread used for the left hand panel has faded to pink. As well as adding visual interest this provides an insight into the circumstances of the weaving. The cotton thread required to weave any cloth in Nigeria was a big expense for the weaver. Here we can imagine a lady whose daughter was approaching marriageable age gradually saving enough money from her daily trading to buy thread and weave the first panel. By the time she has saved sufficient for the second half different, lower quality red thread is all that’s in the market. Condition is excellent.
Measurements 75 inches X 57, 191 cm X 146.
