NW619 – Bold patterned men’s wrapper cloth from the Nupe people of central Nigeria. Woven in three different panels by a woman weaver using a vertical loom, cotton ground with elaborate supplementary weft float motifs in multicoloured rayon. As Muslims Nupe men didn’t usually wear wrapper cloth so we don’t often see Nupe textiles this size. It was probably worn on top of a robe. Dates from around the 1960s and is in excellent condition.
Measurements 90 inches X 80, 230 cm X 203. Plus long fringes.
