Nupe Bling

NW627 – Some Nigerian Muslim bling

1 in stock

Some Nigerian Muslim bling: Lurex ‘metallic’ threads shine from the cotton and rayon ground of this two panel shawl cloth from the Nupe people of central Nigeria. We can imagine a lady taking time to weave this in her compound so she looks her most glamorous at Eid. The traditional Koran writing board motif found in so much Nigerian weaving is replicated and played with across the surface of the cloth. Condition is excellent. Dates from circa 1980s.

Measurements 74 inches plus fringe X 51, 189 cm plus fringe X 124.
