Superb Ewe kente chief’s cloth, with an unusual alternation between numerous narrow multicoloured weft faced blocks and more subdued extra weft float motifs. The narrow weft stripes in the blocks seem to curve back and forth across the cloth giving UN unusual dynamic visual impact. The float motifs are largely geometric but include two groups of hands. The density of weft patterns almost entirely conceals the sober dark blue and green warp stripes of the ground weave except on a single strip one up from the lower edge where the weaver has introduced larger and more widely spaced blocks.
Dates from circa 1930s. In excellent complete condition.
Measures 126 inches X 73, 320 cm X 186.
