Superb and important flag by a documented artist called Nana McCarty (died circa 1955). His work can be identified by the elongated figures and distinctive way of representing the hair. Figure on the left in green shorts is the Asafo officer (the supi) pointing towards the action. The star shape is a fire and the second figure appears to have flames on his pants. I’d like to think this is a Ghana version of “liar liar pants on fire!” See Forni & Ross “Art, Honor and Ridicule” page 61 and flag on page 62 for a discussion of this artist and his Anomabo workshop.
Measures 67 inches x 45. 170 cm x 114.
