FR650 – Collected in northern Ivory Coast this cloth is unlike any others we have seen and its origin remains obscure. A very soft open weave that combines hand spun white, natural beige, and indigo dyed cotton with imported red industrial cotton, the design combines warp stripes with stripes and solid blocks of colour in the weft in a way that echoes some archaic Asante kente pieces. Strips are 7 cm, 2 1/2 inches wide. The original red, visible where a henm was unpicked at some point, has faded to a lovely pink. One small group of marks, otherwise very good condition. Dates to circa 1900-1920, perhaps earlier
Measurement: 76 ins x 51, 193 cm x 130.
