Description

Rare Fante Asafo flag from the late 1950s by the important flagmaker called Mr McCarty, of the Anomabo workshop. We can recognise his distinctive style from features such as the separate articulated arms, the spiky hair, and the less schematic figures. This is the only “Ghana flag” frankaa by this artist I have seen as he died sometime around this date (circa 1955 according to Forni and Ross but that must be a couple of years early.) The central figure is tying shut a large package, watched by two other men, the one on the left with a prominent hunchback. Illustrates the saying “hard work does not break backs”. Very slight colour run from the red figure but otherwise on excellent condition.

Measurements 54 inches x 37, 138 cm x 94.
