Description

AGB135. Interesting Yoruba agbada with two different hand spun indigo dyed cotton strips. Robes without embroidery were much cheaper than the better known embroidered garments and consequently, although still prestige outfits, were more likely to be worn by less wealthy elders than by chiefs and other “big men.” I seldom buy them but occasional examples such as this have a visual appeal that transcends their reduced status. Here the contrast between the two different indigo hand spun cotton asooke strip patterns, with the differences in the scale of the check, is particularly effective. In keeping with it’s more proletarian origins, the “red” stripe” is locally dyed cotton rather than the more expensive silk. Dates from early C20th. Condition is excellent.

Measurements: 95 inches x 50, 241cm x 128.
