AGB136. Attractive mid C20th Yoruba agbada with minimal embroidery and two different ikat patterned aso oke designs. Robes without embroidery were much cheaper than the better known embroidered garments and consequently, although still prestige outfits, were more likely to be worn by less wealthy elders than by chiefs and other “big men.” I seldom buy them but occasional examples such as this have a visual appeal that transcends their reduced status. Here there is an alternation of two different ikat patterned warp striped asooke strips throughout, with the direction reversed on the large front pocket. Dates from circa 1940-50s. Condition is excellent. Measurements: 71 inches x 48, 180cm x 122.
