Description
Although the photograph makes this black and white cloth look like a fairly familiar style of strip weave Ewe kente men’s wrapper, it is in fact a unique miniature version made up of 23 strips that are only 4 cm wide (typically the strips on Ewe kente are 8 – 10 cm width.) So it is a woman’s wrapper but instead of the normal practise of using less strips than for a man, the strips have been drastically narrowed. I can’t help wondering if the owner wore it to accompany here husband in a full sized version of the same design. Just cleaned by our conservator and in excellent condition. Dates from circa 1950s.
Measurements 69 inches x 38, 176 cm x 92.
