SL018 – Very rare hammock from a weaver of the Mende ethnic group in Sierra Leone, from an English private collection. Made up of five wide strips of very thick hand spun white cotton with embellishment from black industrial thread extra weft floats patterning in characteristically Mende motifs. Hammocks were an important item of prestige for chiefs and other important people in Sierra Leone but only a few examples have survived in museum collections. See photo of a hammock in use. There is one a small group of three faint marks, visibe in the detail photo, but otherwise condition is excellent. Dates from first half of C20th.
