FR652 – Very rare C19th or early C20th Malagasy silk shawl, lamba akotifahana, vibrant multicoloured silk striping decorated with finely woven floral and geometric motifs in supplementary weft float patterning. From the Merina people of the Antanarivo region, these patterned lamba were a high status fashion in the second half of the C19th. The figurative bird motif on the central panel is unusual and indicates changing fashion and the influence of European and Indian textiles on Imerina textile design in the latter part of the C19th. Unusually it has signs of considerable wear, with a number of the float motifs worn away. There is also a small bleached mark from a past botched attempt to remove a much smaller stain. Very few Malagasy cloths from this period survive in private hands.
Measures 76 ins x 60ins, 193 cm x 152 cm.
