E940 – Finely woven cotton Ewe chief’s kente with a light brown background and a harmonious all over palette. The design of this beautiful cloth is all about a carefully planned interplay between one and two: the large weft faced blocks are single rather than being paired as is typical, while there are two warp stripes on each cloth strip and two weft stripes in between each weft block. The carefully laid out extra weft floats are predominantly in pairs, sometimes of the same motif, sometimes of two different ones, with a few single larger motifs. Overall a very impressive and attractive piece. Dates from circa 1930s. Condition is excellent.
Measurement: 119 inches x 72, 303 cm x 182.
