Description

K272 – Fine early C20th example of the rare Asante kente pattern known as “liar’s cloth” woven from blue and white cotton. Liar’s cloth is marked by three narrow lines that move both along and across the strip – a technically complex feat that is discussed in this post on my blog. Although woven from imported industrial cotton this cloth has a soft handle and irregular texture that is unlike the tight crisp weave and handle we associate with Asante cotton kente – rather it has a loose open weave and there are variations throughout in the thickness of warp threads giving it a most unusual feel. Additionally there is a faint “cream” colour to the white areas that suggest the white weft threads were dyed a pale yellow that has faded over the decades. Condition: complete, excellent, some of the seams resewn. Dates from circa 1900-20s.

Measurement: 128 inches x 73, 325 cm x 185.
