Description

Bands of subtly different shades of indigo cross this rare Yoruba marriage cloth. Woven from hand spun local cotton in two panels by a woman weaver using an upright loom, these were typically made to be worn by the weaver’s daughter at her wedding. This was a very local style, found only in a small village group near the Igbomina Yoruba town of Omu Aran in Kwara State. The cloth was called “elejo”, “with a snake”, the criss-cross pattern resembling the back of a python. Dates from circa 1930s and is in excellent condition. Measurements: 78 inches x 55, 198 cm x 140. P
