Description

Strip woven indigo  dyed marriage wrapper cloth from the Yoruba city of Ilorin, a major centre of aso oke weaving. This attractive handspun cotton cloth has six different warp striped strip patterns including one with ikat. In her classic book Nigerian Weaving, (1980:38), Venice Lamb illustrates a similar cloth that she says was called ‘oparo eleto.’  It does appear that cloths with combinations of dark indigo, wine red, and green stripes were particularly favoured as wedding attire by brides in Ilorin in the first half of the twentieth century. In excellent complete  condition, dates from around 1920-1950.

Measurement: 72 ins x 59, 184 cm x 140.
