Description

Beautiful and rare handspun cotton Ijebu Yoruba aso olona cloth from early C20th Nigeria. This indigo blue and white type is very scarce. The motifs represent water spirits in the form of mudfish and similar, and at the centre a talking drum. Usually four of these panels would have been joined together to make a chief or elders man’s cloth but there is no sign this one was ever joined. It was probably worn as a sash or possibly tied around the waist of a female elder over her other cloths. In excellent condition.

Measurements 228 cm X 45, 80 inches X 17 1/2.
