Description

Ikat patterning was an established tradition among women weavers in southern Nigeria but it’s use was not particularly widespread. This attractive woman’s wrapper cloth comes from Igarra, a small town south of the Niger-Benue confluence in Edo State. Yellow ikat patterns in industrial cotton warp stripes are set among  a thick indigo dyed handspun cotton ground. This is a fine example of the style, with a pleasing worn soft handle to the cloth. Condition is excellent. Dates to circa 1960s.  From a Swiss  private collection.

Measurements: 69 ins x 48 ins, 176 cm x 121 cm.
