Dramatic ikat patterning on this striped women’s wrapper cloth from the central Nigerian town of Igarra, one of the very few places in Nigeria where ikat cloths were made. Woven mainly from hand spun indigo dyed cotton this is a quite rare style also worn by high status ladies in the nearby village of Somorika  Made up of two wide panels joined at the centre, these cloths were woven by women on an upright single heddle loom producing a thick durable fabric. Dates from around 1930-1950. In excellent condition.

Measurements: 69 ins x 54 ins, 175 cm x 137 cm.
