Description
A large tapestry weave crocodile crosses the strips of this extremely rare Hausa blanket cloth. Hand spun cotton throughout and with some pleasing indigo weft float patterns. Dates from first half of the twentieth century. It is not in great condition but it is of great interest. I collected it with a second complete version in Nigeria about 20 years ago – the complete one is now in the British Museum. Together they are the only examples of figurative imagery on this type of Hausa cloth that I know of. Missing one and a half strips and with the seams resewn by machine.
Measurements 8’2″ x 4′, 248 cm x 122.
